A straight wager:
A straight wager is the simplest way to bet on sports, it is a single bet on a single wagering line. The favorite type of straight wager for sports bettors is to bet on the point spread, which is a line that determines the favorite or the underdog of the game.
The favorite will always have a minus (-) and it is usually below the underdog (identified with a +) on the betting line. Though, not always the favorite will be below, as by default, the team on the bottom of the betting line is the house team, and sometimes not even having home advantage is a team considered as a favorite.
Let’s put a betting line example:
Lakers +9
Celtics -9 196 over/under
The example above is the most common betting line. First we have the Lakers as underdogs with a +9, which means that it doesn’t matter if the Lakers lose the game, if they sum nine points to their final score and go above the score of the winning team, the bettor wins the bet, on the other hand, the Celtics will only win if after counting 9 points down, they are still above the Lakers in the final score.
The other line we can see there is the over / under, which means that you can bet the game to go over or under a combined score of 196 points.
By the way, everything in sports betting is mostly based on a 10 cent line, which means that if you are betting the favorite, you will need to pay 110 to get 100 dollars, on the other hand, if you are betting the underdog, you will need to bet 100 to get 110.
